Built from a small everyday frustration
I wanted to keep watching or listening to Facebook Reels while coding and browsing elsewhere. That idea became Video Player & Reels Controls for Facebook, a vanilla JavaScript extension published on the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons.
Taking playback beyond the feed
The extension adds floating Picture-in-Picture viewing, next and previous Reel navigation, playback speed controls, keyboard shortcuts, A–B looping, and split-screen comments. Adaptive HD playback depends on the quality available for each video.
Separate streams, one download
A key engineering challenge was handling video and audio delivered as separate DASH streams. I implemented client-side MP4 muxing to combine supported streams in the browser without re-encoding.
The project brought together Shaka Player, MPEG-DASH, MP4 internals, Web Audio, and browser APIs. Stream URL refresh, caching, and dynamic navigation are part of keeping playback useful on a changing page.
